The Honeymoon Dilemma

I promise that more tomato soup recipes are coming, but in the meantime, I need your help.

I'm stumped. As I mentioned a few months back, I won a contest through my company granting me $1000 and an extra week of vacation to use towards a trip to Tuscany. JiT and I are thrilled and originally planned to make this our honeymoon. However, after further discussion, we've decided that timing for a trip to Italy would be better if we waited until next fall, when the weather in Italy will be better and we won't already be completely exhausted from our wedding. Plus we completed SCUBA certification classes with the intention of doing some SCUBA diving on our honeymoon....on a beach...not in Italy.

Sooo...we've decided that instead of doing a grand, epic 2 week honeymoon like we'd oringally planned, we'll do a shorter (and hopefully cheaper) trip in March, followed by the larger Italy trip in the fall. But now I'm stuck on where we should go for our honeymoon.

Before the Italy thing every came up, I'd had my heart set on Belize, so we could go stay in our own little hut and tour ancient ruins and what-not in addition to diving. I'd looked at this place, this place and this place. All are now out of our price range, I think.

We've also been thinking about going to a Sandals resort...my sister and her husband went to one in St. Lucia last year and loved it....and EVERYTHING is included. But with the airfare, its not really THAT cheap...and I'm afraid it might be a little...generic? Is that the right word? Just not very unique I guess.

JiT and I have NEVER been on a vacation together where we weren't with family or friends (EVER), and we haven't been on a vacation at all in a couple of years, so I really want it to be special and unique. But, in order for us to not break the bank before we do this Italy thing I'm kind of stuck. We really need to get something booked soon so I'm hoping you guys can help. Any ideas?

P.S. Not Mexico.

I'd steer clear of big all-inclusive resorts in run-of-the-mill places in Mexico and the Caribbean because I have three words for you, my friend: College. Spring. Break.

Can't imagine that's your thing.

What about Costa Rica or somewhere else in Central America where you can definitely stay and eat on a budget? (Sounding like Belize might be the way to go!)

Snack cart... gotta run

I have an aquaintance who is from Belize, she's here getting her masters degree. I know she goes home frequently. I'll see if she can recommend someplace there that isnt a big resort. The pictures she has a beautiful! And Italy in the fall? I bet its gorgeous.

I did my honeymoon in St. Lucia at a Sandals resort. These are couples all-inclusives so it's not like 20 fraternity guys will be on spring break cruising the scene. We visited all three since Shuttles go back and forth hourly. They have 3 resorts... the Grande is the new, fancy one and lots of action. If you're into hanging poolside at the bar and meeting a lot of people, this is THE place to be. Across the board the youngest crowd... and the nicest spa, the couples massge there was the best we have ever gotten. The Regency is the one with the golf course. If golfing is on the agenda I recommend this one. It's a nice atmosphere and a total mix of ages of people. The third one is the Haylcon... it's where we stayed since the other ones were booked. It's the oldest of the three resorts and the rooms are outdated... BUT the upside is it's very chill. You don't have to fight or a spot on the beach. It's a lot smaller than the other two so the staff knows you after a day or two. It was really "cozy" compared to the faster pace of the other two. So if you're looking to have lots of one on one time with your hubby, this is the best of the three to go to. The crowd is generally older, which really just means you aren't fighting all day for the attention of the bartender poolside.
But really, since it's so easy to get back and forth between the resorts you can experience a bit of all of them.
Also - when they say all-inclusive they mean it. The staff is not allowed to accept tips. So if you're working on a budget then yo cn stick to it... of course plan for any excursions or spa things. It was about $50 a person for the excursions. Also - we took a helicopter ride to the airport on our way back to avoid the hour plus trip in the very slow bus, it was $200 for us as a couple, but totally worth it. You can arrange that upon arrival.
Hope this helps!

or I spent a month in hawaii a few years back--if you stay in places that are NOT honolulu or some other main tourist destination, it's not quite as expensive. you could rent a condo instead of getting a hotel, and then save by mostly cooking at home which you like to do anyway...

All inclusive sounds like a dream honeymoon. My husband and I honeymooned in Germany and Austria and it was even more stress on top of the stress-fest that we called our nuptials. Anyway, I booked a trip for my boss last year to Antigua (http://www.carlisle-bay.com/) and he said it was wonderful. Good luck!
