Valentine’s Day has always been one of my favorite holidays, and not always in the romantic sense. As the daughter of a first grade teacher, themed crafts, clothing and treats have always been a major part of our holiday celebrations and Valentine’s Day is no exception. I can still remember decorating my first Valentine’s “mailbox” for my kindergarten card exchange. My mom suggested using plain white wrapping paper to cover my shoe box before adding stickers and I thought it was total genius. So far, my kids haven’t been asked to make mailboxes for their school parties so instead, we spend extra time making fun cards for their friends.
The store-bought Valentine card options have gotten pretty cute and clever but, when the kids are up for it, I still enjoy creating something unique with them. Since I know they’ll be getting plenty of candy and toys already, I try to steer them toward more practical items. As a first grader, Lillian and her friends seem to go through a TON of pencils so giving them as a Valentine seemed like a fun, appropriate and affordable favor. I created these cute little Cupid’s Arrow Pencil Valentines for us to fasten to each pencil. In addition to pencils, we were able to find coordinating heart sharpeners at the dollar store.
