Transform a standard clear pencil box in into an adorable DIY Decoupage Pencil Box in under an hour using Modge Podge glue and a scrap of wrapping paper.
How cute is this little DIY Decoupage Pencil Box that Lilly and I made today? She is so pleased with how it turned out!
We always order her school supplies through her elementary school’s PTA fundraiser program. Its so convenient having all the supplies arrive pre-packaged in one big box — plus it helps the school. But sometimes the fundraiser-issued supplies are a little generic.
While we were at Target running errands last week, Lilly noticed some of the snazzy pencil boxes on display and seemed a little crestfallen about her own plain clear plastic pencil box. Rather than buying a duplicate box, we decided to give her existing pencil box a makeover. At first we thought about using stickers, but instead decided to create a more polished, durable look with the same decoupage technique we used for our Decoupage Flameless Candle project a few months ago. We ended up created the most adorable DIY Decoupage Pencil Box.
Lilly selected a piece of pretty wrapping paper to create the decorative cover for her box. We cut a piece of wrapping paper to the same size as the box lid. We decided to cover only the lid and leave the bottom half of the box plain so that she can still see whats inside easily.
Then we grabbed a bottle of Modge Podge glue and a foam paintbrush and got to work. Lilly did most of the work herself and the whole project took less than an hour. We even made some matching pencils!
Lilly is so excited to show off her DIY Decoupage Pencil Box next week once school starts. She loves that its completely unique and exactly what she wanted. I could say the same things about her 😉
To make your own DIY Decoupage Pencil Box, you’ll need:
- 1 clear or solid color plastic pencil box
- wrapping paper or other decorative paper, larger than the box
- scissors
- 1 foam brush
- 1 small bottle of Modge Podge glue
Instructions:
- Cut wrapping paper to the same size as the box lid, be sure to include the edges in the measurement.
- Squirt a few tablespoons of Modge Podge glue onto a plate and use foam brush to paint a light, even layer of glue over the entire outside of the box lid. Don’t forget the sides of the lid.
- Carefully line up the wrapping paper with the lid, starting with the opening edge and working backward. Smooth the paper to the box as you go (there will be a few bumps and bubbles…thats part of the charm).
- Once the paper is affixed, paint a second layer of glue over the entire lid, paying careful attention to covering the edges and any seams in the corners.
- Allow the glue to dry completely — up to 2 hours — before handling.
