Create a Beautiful Thanksgiving Table
When it comes to holiday decor, I’m a big fan of working with what you’ve got. I don’t really own much in the way of fancy table linens or placemats. I don’t have a single charger plate or candlestick. None of the special pieces that my mother would use to dress up the dining room for an event. So when I holidays like Thanksgiving, I improvise. Cheaply. The end result is a Beautiful Thanksgiving Table that pairs my everyday dishes with seasonal edibles to create an elegant-meets-rustic vibe that is easy to replicate.
Elevate Your Everyday Dishes
While I do own a lovely set of china that we received for our wedding, its a pain to drag it out and I find the all-white look a bit stark. Instead, I much prefer creating a Beautiful Thanksgiving Table using our everyday dishes, all from the Denby Studio Blue collection. The entire collection is made of durable stoneware and features a range of four different glazes that I find absolutely beautiful. When set at our dining room table, they look elegant yet casual — the perfect vibe for the way our family entertains.
Next I round out the look with linens — instead of formal napkins — I actually prefer these blue and white dish towels that I buy on Amazon. I like the casual look and extra absorbency they provide at mealtime (lets face it: at least one of the kids is going to spill their milk). These towels are extremely affordable and easy to wash so we use them for everything. Not only do they make great napkins, they’re also wonderful dish towels and even a substitute for paper towels.
Double Duty Centerpiece
When it comes to choosing a centerpiece, I like to find inspiration is the meal itself. Instead of expensive flower arrangements or candles and knick knacks I’ll have to store later, I like creating a centerpiece using fresh herbs, bowls of seasonal fruits, platters of cheese, bread, crackers and nuts. Everything I’ve used here was readily available at the supermarket, affordable and seasonally appropriate. They also serve as a lovely appetizer for guests to nibble as they settle in for the meal.
Since we just brought our window box herb garden in for the season, I simply placed it on the table and arranged the other items around it. In past years, I’ve bought bunches of cut herbs at the supermarket and arranged them in mason jars. Chances are, if you’re preparing a Thanksgiving meal, you probably already have bunches of herbs tucked into your refrigerator anyway.
Overall, I was very pleased with how well this table came together. It looks beautiful and welcoming while still being affordable and approachable. Even better, all of the foods can be enjoyed after the meal, limiting waste and extending the celebration for days to come.
