This is an easy, affordable and portable desk setup for homework or remote learning, made from a Trifold Presentation Board.
We made these DIY Homework Stations (or portable study carrels) as an easy way to create privacy at our shared remote learning space. These are also a great option if you don’t have room for a dedicated desk space — you can set this portable version up at a kitchen table or other space temporarily.
I’d planned to share this idea during my television segment on FOX this morning, but it got cut for time. So wanted to highlight it here. You can see our larger remote learning home makeover and some additional tips and tools over here.
How to Make Your Homework Station
Materials:
- Trifold Presentation Board (36 x 48″)
- Exacto Knife
- Glue Stick
- Hot Glue Gun and Glue Sticks
- Scissors
- Optional decor and accessories
- Wrapping Paper to cover board
- Zippered School Supply Pouch
- Dry Erase Pockets
- Clothespins or other clips
- Post-It Notes
- Calendar
- School supplies
Instructions:
Start by using the exacto knife to cut your presentation board in half width wise to create TWO boards (we found that 36″ was too tall for one child seated at a desk). Cutting the board in half creates the perfect side board.
Next, add your wrapping paper if desired. Start by lining up your wrapping paper at the top corner. Slowing add a thin layer of glue stick glue, unrolling the paper and smoothing it on as you go. Don’t worry if your wrapping paper is longer than your board. You can cut that off at the end. Once the board is completely covered and secured with glue, use scissors to cut off the excess paper.
Now, add accessories to your Homework Station.
We include a dry-erase pocket to hold daily schedules (the pocket can be checked off and then erased with a dry erase marker). These are also great for holding worksheets and other materials.
We also added a Zip Pencil Pouch to hold loose supplies.
We secured these items in place with hot glue.
Finally, we rounded out the decor on our Homework Station with a calendar, to-do list, and a packet of post-it notes. My daughter glued on a few clothespins to her board to hold photographs and other mementos.
Use your imagination and you can easily create a station that is inspiring AND functional — for a very affordable price!
