This No-Sew DIY Unicorn Costume is super simple to make using a hooded sweatshirt and common craft materials.
How to make a unicorn costume
Lilly is OBSESSED with her Halloween costume this year! She asked to be a unicorn and I think we managed to make the coziest, fuzziest unicorn costume ever. She keeps asking if she can put it on just to go for walks around the neighborhood.
This costume was definitely a team effort between Lilly and I — and easy enough that she was able to do a lot of the work herself (she’s 9, btw).
Even better, it will be cozy and warm no matter what the weather is like!
Easy Unicorn Costume Tutorial
We used hot glue to fasten on all of the decorations for this costume, so its truly a no-sew situation. We made the entire thing in just a matter of hours.
We started with the mane, horn, which is simply a piece of glitter felt, rolled into a cone and secured with hot glue. Then we surrounded it with felt flowers. Click this link for a tutorial on making felt flowers. The flowers helped to keep the horn anchored in place. We surround the horn with a layer of hot glue to help keep it sturdy.
Next we worked on the mane and tail for our No-Sew DIY Unicorn Costume. The mane and tail are both made entirely of yarn. I borrowed HEAVILY from this awesome tutorial over at Craftaholics Anonymous, so feel free to pop over to that page for a better explanation of the process.
For the mane, I used made a series of yarn “pom poms” by winding yarn around my hand, then tying it together on one side and cutting the loops on the opposite side. Unlike other versions of this project that require yarn in multiple colors, Lilly chose a baby yarn that had the variated colors mixed right in. This made the winding process much simpler because I was only dealign with one ball of yarn at a time. For each “pom pom” I would the hard around my hand about 50 times. I think I made a total of about 10 “pom poms” to run the length of her hood. Once created, these are simply attached with hot glue.
I followed the same process for the tail, just increased the length of the yarn so that instead of winding around my hand, it wound around my leg from my foot to my knee. I wound the yard about 100 times to create a nice, full tail.
Finally, we finished there whole thing by adding a felt oval “tummy” on the front of the sweatshirt and the faux fur cuffs at the hands and feet. The fur cuffs were Lilly’s idea and I think they REALLY made this costume special! We bought these squares of fir from JoAnn Fabrics and cut them in half. Each cuff was made from half of a fabric piece. We simply hot glued them on to the arms and legs of her outfit. The fur doesn’t quite wrap completely around but we were actually happy with this…the gaps allowed her a little extra mobility for her hand and the heels of her shoes.
